Burmese generals shaken: Rangoon hit by new quakes

Another strong earthquake hit Burma’s capital Rangoon at 3am local time on 29 December.

Not many people realised the occurrence of the quake as most of them were asleep at the time of the day. Those who lived on higher levels of the high rising buildings were awakened by the quake and they fled onto the ground floor in panic.

A Rangoon resident told DVB that creaking and shaking noises could also be heard and some buildings were damaged.

There has been no official statement on the latest quake from the country’s military junta, State Peace and Development Council (SPDC).

At the same time, the family members of top generals such as Than Shwe, Maung Aye and Shwe Mann have been involved in full-time “evil warding off” ceremonies since the first quake occurred.

The generals’ families are particularly shaken by the quakes as the worst hit areas in Burma are said to be regions under the command of General Than Shwe when he was a military commander. And the regions have been heavily invested by an armed dealer U Teza and daughters of the generals, according to those close to them.

Meanwhile, the generals are also planning to redecorate Swan-U Ponnyashin Pagoda at Sagaing Hills which was venerated by the ousted “Prime Minister” General Khin Nyunt with a new diamond “crown”.
