Date: Dec 28 2004 From: Herald Sun Burma quiet on death toll BURMA'S secretive regime has released few details of its tsunami toll.
Reports from state-run television have confirmed 12 deaths after a bridge collapsed on the southern tip of Burma. "They were killed when a bridge collapsed," said the operator of a fishing company in the town. The deaths occurred yesterday at Kawthaung, opposite the city of Ranong in southern Thailand. Government officials said fishing trawlers were also unaccounted for. Oil rigs in the Andaman Sea shut down their pipelines for about three hours after the earthquake, "for safety reasons but there is no facility damage to the rigs", an official from one of the rigs said. Reports in Burmese media made no mention of damage or of casualties from the magnitude 9.0 earthquake. State-controlled television reports warned that aftershocks were likely to follow for three days, and warned the public to take precautionary measures, such as not standing under tall buildings. Burma's military-run regime rarely provides details of natural or man-made disasters in the country. More Burma News from this Month |
